Creating a Cozy Reading Nook in Small Spaces

One of my favorite ways to fight the winter blues is by redecorating and organizing my home. When I’m stuck inside during this time of year, I try to make the most of it by turning my space into a cozy, comfortable haven.

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with all the cute reading nook ideas I’ve seen on Pinterest and Instagram. I love the idea of having a special spot just for reading and relaxing. While having a window seat reading nook would be a dream, I’m working with what I’ve got—a small apartment—and want to create my own cozy nook this winter.

Renovating or adding custom shelves isn’t really an option in a tiny apartment (especially on a budget), but the good news is, with a little creativity and some rearranging, you can make a reading nook for free using things you already have at home.

Location

Start by deciding where you want to set up your reading nook. Ideally, you’ll want a quiet, tucked-away spot, which can be tricky if you live in a small house or apartment. If there’s no obvious space, try clearing out a corner of your bedroom.

If you’re lucky enough to have a window seat or a small, cozy area already in your home, that’s the perfect spot for your nook.

If possible, place your nook near a window for natural light. It’s also handy to be close to an outlet for a lamp or other lighting, but if not, an extension cord will do the trick!

Books and Bookshelves

A reading nook isn’t complete without books, right?

If you have a bookshelf, try moving it behind your nook to make it part of the space. Don’t worry if you don’t have one or don’t want to buy one—you can get creative by turning a crate on its side or simply stacking your books on the floor. If you have enough space, you can even use a bookshelf as a room divider to separate your nook from the rest of the room—one of my favorite ways to use a bookshelf!

Seating and Furniture

Creating a super comfy seating area is key for a cozy reading nook. While vintage or old-fashioned chairs can give your space a dreamy boho vibe, you can really use any upholstered chair you have. Floor cushions or bean bags are great budget-friendly options too. If you’re lucky enough to have a window seat, just make sure the cushion is thick and comfy enough for long reading sessions.

It’s also helpful to have a little table or a spot on your bookshelf within arm’s reach to set down your drink or phone while you relax and read.

Fabrics

Adding fabrics is a great way to make your reading nook feel cozy and stylish. Toss a soft blanket over your chair and add a couple of plush throw pillows for extra comfort. If you can, consider placing a small Persian-style rug to give the space a vintage touch and add warmth. It’s an easy way to bring in some texture and make the nook more inviting.

Lighting and Decor

If you have a window nearby, hang some white, sheer curtains to let in a soft, cozy light. For nighttime reading, set up a lamp, and make the space feel extra magical with fairy lights or flameless candles (much safer than real ones in a small space!).

To give your nook a personal touch, decorate the area around it. Add plants or dried flowers for a bit of greenery, hang up posters or prints, and place your favorite decorations on the shelves. It’s all about making the space feel like your own!
